Indian ocean as free space

India reiterated its support for a multilateral rules-based international order, emphasising the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in revitalising the Indian Ocean as a strong community. India has been consistently exposing China’s increasing assertiveness in the strategic region. Maintaining the Indian Ocean as a free, open, and inclusive space, aligning with the principles outlined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS), is most significant in today’s challenging times. China’s expansionist policies have garnered criticism for undermining regional stability. They’ve engaged in projects of massive financial scale under the guise of infrastructure development, leaving neighbouring nations entangled in a web of debt. Notably, these projects often prove to be commercially unviable, further exacerbating the economic vulnerabilities of countries like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In addition, China’s incremental territorial claims in the seas have fuelled unnecessary tensions, compelling smaller nations to divert substantial resources towards safeguarding their territories, which ultimately results in economic crises. China’s aggressive stance has been a disruptive force, while India has assumed the role of a benevolent elder sibling. India has proactively assisted numerous smaller nations in constructing essential infrastructure, including hydroelectric facilities, mining operations, port development, airport construction, and healthcare facilities. Additionally, India consistently extends its support during times of crises or natural disasters, standing ready to provide vital assistance in dire circumstances.
International treaties, designed to protect the world’s oceans, should be scrupulously adhered to. Given that Asia is the most densely populated continent, fostering cooperation among its nations can significantly boost trade and subsequently enhance the economies of all countries involved. India has consistently played a role as a guide and mentor to its neighbouring nations, refraining from initiating aggression against any nation and always respecting the land and maritime borders of its neighbours. Collectively, the countries in this region hold the potential to expand and control a significant portion of global trade. Unfortunately, the lack of trust and unity among these nations continues to hinder the realisation of this potential, acting as a hindrance to regional progress.
