JAMMU, Sept 30: Senior leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jayesh Gupta today expressed concern over the working of Indian Red Cross Society in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the organization which is known for its humanitarian activities across the globe, is in doldrums in the Union Territory.
Addressing a press conference here, Jayesh Gupta said that in J&K we all are facing proxy war and besides Government help, Red Cross Society also needs to play a very vital role by mobilizing its resources in helping poor victims of accident, natural calamities, disasters and all kind of support to children to get education and medical treatment etc.
The AAP leader said as per new rules passed by both the Houses of Parliament in 2017 and adopted in J&K in May 2022, elected representatives of Civil Society are to run the affairs of Indian Red Cross Society at district and State/UT levels but even after adoption of new rules, nothing tangible is done except for the appointment of General Secretary and that too in gross violation of rules.
“In Jammu district, elections of the new Managing Committee of District Red Cross Society were conducted by the Deputy Commissioner Office in July 2023 but till date the DC and his subordinate are holding the charge without any valid reasons. The position in other district is more or less the same, there also the DC and their subordinates are running the show and are least interested in conduct of elections,” Gupta lamented.
He appealed the Lt Governor as well as Chief Secretary of J&K to intervene and take immediate corrective steps in J&K Red Cross Society for the betterment of the society.
