India’s trusteeship orientation can shape new world order: Varun Sahni

JAMMU, Sept 24: Former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof Varun Sahni said that we are at the cusp of transformational times and strategic uncertainty in world politics, engineering common good is becoming the central idea of collective survival.
He was delivering key note address during the Prelude Conference on “India Emerging as a Global Leader” organized by Indian Institute of Public Administration, JK Regional Branch.
While deciphering the topic, he narrated the attributes of India and strategic interests arising out of it. According to Prof. Sahni, long term interests of India include strategic economy, status transformation, deepening democratic values, projecting Indian culture, keeping the borders secure, mitigating internal ruptures and moderating the maritime power. He was of the view that old policy grooves will not navigate India through this strategic transition and a novel approach will ensure security, prosperity & identity of the country.
While differentiating between great powers, super powers, rising powers, declining powers and emerging powers, he said that India can easily maneuver towards rising power and has the capability and willingness to play a system shaping role. While deliberating on the topic, he raised a pertinent question as to – Can India reduce regional incoherence and establish its global influence? He said India is in a position to articulate an attractive and distinctive vision as a Global leader by operationalising trusteeship in the field of planetary ecosystem, a key concern in the world order.
Dr Ashok Bhan, former DGP, JKP and Patron, IIPA JKRB, in his presidential remarks, said that, “Social cohesion and co-existence are the only ways that India- a multi-cultural, multi faith and multi-linguistic society- can grow as a nation.” B R Sharma, former Secretary, GoI and Chief Secretary, JK and Chairman of IIPA JKRB, in his address, said that the next 25 years of AmritKaal will shape the destiny of the country and India will emerge as a developed country by 2047.
K B Jandial, Director (Seminars), IIPA JKRB, said that India has emerged as the 5th largest economy in the world and can significantly make a mark in global arena.
