The country embarking upon manufacturing most of its products for defence needs indigenously is a big leap taken towards fulfilment of the vision of self reliance . We having learnt, even if belatedly, about the futility of depending on foreign suppliers for such products especially the spare parts and doing little about it at home, is tantamount to responding to the emerging global challenges – economic, political and defence related as also ensuring quick and hassles free delivery. If it is said that employment opportunities potential too was an important ingredient of such a policy, it would not be any sort of an overstatement.
That by 2024-25, the country shall be meeting up to 90 percent of its such requirements from domestic production as per the assertion of the Union Defence Minister generates high hopes especially the fact that a substantial quantum of such products shall be exported too to earn anywhere a whooping amount of over Rs.3000 crore annually. Even otherwise, we are currently an exporting country in arms and weapons as the country produces 65 percent of defence products indigenously now as against importing the same to the tune of over 70 percent a few years back. India on the path of “Atma Nirbarta” or self reliance, particularly aspiring in the defence sector, is of great import.
