Indirect election of Sarpanches may encourage corruption: Shahnawaz

RAMBAN, Nov 22:  State convenor of Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan and PCC general secretary Shahnawaz Choudhary today alleged that indirect election  of Sarpanches would give rise to the  horse trading and encourage corruption.
In a meeting with block conveners, Panches and Sarpanches of district Ramban under the leadership of  Shahnawaz Choudhary, the members strongly opposed the decision of the State Government to hold indirect elections of Sarpanches  and said that it would   encourage corruption.
Ex-MLA Ramban Ashok Kumar, Distt Congress president Ramban Arun Singh Raju, NSUI  state president Neeraj Kundan, Ajaz Ahmed  secretary, PYC, J&K and Block president Farooq Choudhary also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, a resolution was passed by all the Panches and Sarpanches including block Convenors to fight against the government against it’s decision of holding indirect elections of Sarpanches. They also pledged to fight for the implementation of 73rd Amendment of constitution in J&K Panchayati Raj Act.
Shahnawaz Choudhary while lashing at the Government said that BJP is Centralising the powers every where in the country and particularly in J&K. In the last Assembly elections majority of the Central leadership of BJP  including Prime Minister Narender Modi in  election rallies made commitment that if they voted o power they will implement the 73rd Amendment in J&K but instead of implementing, they have further weakened and diluted the Panchayti Raj Act by deciding to hold the indirect elections of Sarpanches. He said that the Coalition Government want to keep the power at Civil Secretariat instead to the people at grass root level.
PCC leader said that the last Government of  Congress and National Conference has passed the bill in the assembly as per the provisions of 73rd assembly. But this Government instead of implementing it have brought  the old Panchayati Raj system back which will not be acceptable to people. He further appealed to the State Govt to take back  it’s decision of holding indirect elections of Sarpanches.
Ex MLA Ramban Ashok kumar, Distt President Ramban Arun singh, NSUI state president Neeraj Kundan and PYC secretary Ajaz Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
