SRINAGAR, July 13: Residents of the Indrakote area in Sumbal in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, today voiced their grievances over the absence of basic amenities such as drinking water and electricity, despite assurances from the administration at the onset of the holy month of Muharram.
The area, predominantly Shia, traditionally observed religious practices without any interruption during Muharram. Yet, this year, residents face severe disruptions due to a lack of essential services. Mohammad Ibrahim Dar, a local resident, emphasized the critical issues faced by the community. “There are serious problems with electricity, and the authorities should have ensured that basic services were in place for us. Unfortunately, even access to drinking water is not available,” he said.
Adding to these concerns, Akhter Rasool pointed out significant gaps in medical facilities, crucial for the well-being of mourners during this sacred period. “In previous years, we had access to these services. This year, however, there is a absence of medical facilities, and even additional food supplies have not been provided,” Rasool said. He also highlighted the lack of street lights, compounding the difficulties faced by residents during nighttime activities.
In response to these complaints, the Subdistrict Magistrate of Sumbal (SDM), Amir Chowdhary said, “Like every year, we started preparations a week before. We visited these areas, including the Imambaras, to ensure all facilities were available. This year, we requested requisitions from all the Imambaras regarding necessary improvements. Some pending development works have been completed, and other projects have been included in the plan. Once funds are available, work will begin.” He added that some non-functioning streetlights have been made functional.
