Infiltration bid foiled: 1 more militant killed in Uri sector, toll rises to 6

SRINAGAR:  With the killing of one more militant, six infiltrators have been gunned down near the Line of Control (LoC) after alert troops foiled an infiltration bid in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.

The total tally of infiltrating militants killed has risen to 13 with the thwarting of the fourth infiltration bid at LoC in north Kashmir since Wednesday.

A soldier was also martyred and two others were injured during the counter-insurgency operation on Thursday.

Official sources said here that troops detected a group of militants sneaking into this side of border from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) at Uri sector in Baramulla last evening.

However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.

Security forces retaliated, they said, adding two militants were killed in the initial exchange of fire. Reinforcements were rushed and a search operation was launched near the LoC in Uri sector.

They said contact was again established with the militants during which three more infiltrators were gunned down. One more militant was killed later in the evening.

They said search operation was still going on in the area.

On May 26, two Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) members, who tried to infiltrate into this side of LoC at Uri sector to carry out an attack on soldiers, were gunned down.

Six more militants were killed in the same sector on the following day when they attempted to sneak into Kashmir valley from across the border. (AGENCIES)
