SRINAGAR, June 3: Army today foiled an infiltration bid in Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district by killing a militant.
A joint team of Army’s 4/4 GR and 103 Batallion of BSF posted near Ustad Post adjacent to Manjeet Post in Keran sector along the Line of Control (LoC) noticed some suspicious movement near the fence this afternoon.
Army fired some shots and militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight one infiltrator was killed. The body of the militant has been recovered along with an AK-47 rifle and four magazines.
Additional reinforcement was rushed to the area and a massive search operation with the help of sniffer dogs was launched to trace out the other members of the militant group.
And police today identified two militants who were killed in an encounter last week in Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district as top commanders of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM).
The two militants belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit and have been identified as Mehmood Bhai and Waqas alias Hyder. Both were residents of Pakistan.
The duo was involved in the killings of three persons in Kralgund area – Ghulam Nabi Khawaja, Shahnawaz Khan and Jana.
Mehmood Bhai, a top Jaish commander, who was active since 2015 and was operating in Handwara area along with Waqas was also involved in the killing of four policemen in an IED blast at Sopore on January 6 this year.
The duo was heading towards the LoC to receive the newly infiltrated group of JeM when the gun battle broke out at Qaziabad forests in Kralgund on Thursday.
In the meantime, families claimed that two among the five infiltrators killed in Tanghdar sector last month are their wards who had joined militancy.
They said that two of them are Sheeraz Ahmad Sheikh of Lajoora Pulwama and Mudasir Ahmad of Parigam Kulgam had gone missing. Sheeraz was missing since September 2017 while as Mudasir from July 2016.
The families said that they identified their kin through photographs shared by some locals on social media and demanded body for proper burial.
The bodies of the two militants who were killed on May 25 have been buried on May 27 at Badwan in frontier Tanghdar sector are likely to be exhumed in a day or two for DNA tests as two police officers have been sent to Kupwara to verify the claim of the families.
