SRINAGAR, June 17 : Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh today said continuous infiltration bids are being made along the Line of Control (LoC) in a bid to keep “terrorism alive.”
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Jashn-e-Dal programme in Srinagar, the DGP said that this type of activities are being perpetrated by various Pakistan agencies when the militancy in Kashmir is at its last breath.
“This type of activities are still on when militancy is at its last breath. Pakistan’s various agencies are resorting to such activities to keep it alive. Our agencies have foiled these attempts, the anti-infiltration grid along the border is strong and it is working strongly and effectively,” he said.
Singh said that some successful infiltration bids have taken place in Rajouri-Poonch areas in which some militants managed to sneak in who targeted civilians and security forces.
“Prior to this, half a dozen such activities were foiled but in Poonch area a couple of such attempts have been successful in which dreaded terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated and who targeted the common people and at places security forces as well. Operations against them is going on at several places and such types of conspiracies will be defeated,” he added.
Giving details of the recent infiltration bids in Poonch and Jummagund, the DGP said that in Poonch the infiltrators fled back while in Jummagund five of them were gunned down.
“Yesterday two attempts were made. One at Poonch and another at Jummagund where terrorists were trying to infiltrate from Pakistan. In Poonch, their attempt was foiled and they were not allowed to enter Indian territory and they took cover of dense foliage to flee back but huge cache of arms and ammunition which they were carrying was recovered. In Kupwara, Jummagund, five terrorists who had come from Pakistan side were killed,” he added.
Singh said that for the first time after a long gap, people of J&K are reaping the peace dividend’s as children are going to school, business activities going on without disruptions and tourists arriving in large numbers.
To a query about arrangements for the upcoming Yatra, the DGP said that all the security arrangements are being done to ensure smooth and peaceful pilgrimage. “We will ensure every pilgrim goes back with great memories,” he said.
Singh said that one great thing was that the people of J&K have rejected the violence and living a peaceful life. On narcotics and addiction of large number of J&K youth towards drugs, he advocated a social initiative by civil society to curb the menace apart from the ongoing war against drugs by police.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, he said Jashn-e-Dal is an opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s hospitality. “Some 600 children having interest in water sports are participating in the event. We want to provide them a platform at national and international level,” he said, adding that Dal lake is not just beautiful but peaceful as ever. “People are roaming around and planning their trips without fear,” he said.
The DGP said that some elements are still hatching conspiracies to disrupt peace but “police are active and fighting on all fronts to foil such plans.”
