Srinagar, Dec 28: The Shere Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has issued a selection list of students for Nursing and Technology Courses to its Madre Meharban College of Nursing, Soura, at a time when Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) has already selected students for such courses.
The SKIMS merit list for B.Sc Nursing and Technology Courses (Notification No: SIMS/ACAD/305 05/B.Sc/2020-9712-15 dated 23/12/2020) was issued on December 23 and examination was held on November 17, 2020. Ironically, notification (No: SIMS/ACAD/20 of 2019 dated 19/12/2020) for holding of the examination was issued over a month after the examination was held.
Two days prior to SKIMS list, the BOPEE issued a selection list (No: BOPEE/Exam-35(110/2020 dated 18-12-2020) of over 1700 students for Nursing and Technology Courses that are being conducted in para-medical colleges across Jammu and Kashmir including Madre Meharban College of Nursing, SKIMS Soura. Now with these two lists there will be two batches in the SKIMS college for 2021.
The list was issued by SKIMS despite BOPEE being the only authority to make selections for professional courses in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, SKIMS was making selection for Nursing and Technology Courses on its own but now there is a Common Entrance Test for all colleges and colleges are allotted as per merit and choice given by students.
Administration Officer Academic SKIMS, Shoukat Ahmad Lala, told Excelsior that the Institute made these admissions as they had already invited applications for admission to the college in 2019. “This was the pending batch of 2019”, he said.
On two batches running simultaneously despite COVID restrictions, Lala said that the decision was taken by the administration of the SKIMS. “They said we can run two shifts of the college as it involves career of students”, he said.
On issuing notice after the examination, he said that it was a typo error. On issuing notice of declaration of results after two days of declaration of results, he said that there was no issue in it. Later, the SKIMS issued a corrigendum changing the date notification from 19-12-2020 to 09-12-2020 and declaration of results from December 12, 2020 to December 15 2020.
In SKIMS list for the first time, the first 5 toppers have got 100 percent marks and second five got 99. In 2018 selection list of the same college, the topper got 88 percent marks and 2015 topper has 70 percent marks. Ironically majority of the toppers are from three particular areas of Kashmir raising doubts over the selection list.
Those who have secured 100 out of 100 in SKIMS list are Liyaquat Gani, Huma Hamid, Iqra Rashid, Shabnum Yousuf and Suhail Nabi. The next six – Suhail Nabi Khanday, Fiza Feroz, Snober Javed, Subreena Rashid, Sajid Hassan and Mahvish Nabi – have secured 99 marks.
Out of first 15 toppers in SKIMS list of 107 who have secured 100, 99 or 98 marks, only two have made it to BOPEE list in which over 1700 students got admission in various Nursing College across J&K. Iqra Rashid who scored 100 in SKIMS list has 683 rank in BOPEE list and Subreena Rashid who has secured 99 in SKIMS, has a rank of 2455. Both the students despite being toppers in similar examinations in same week have performed poorly raising questions over selection list.
Also majority of the toppers of SKIMS list did not figure in the recent selection list of Panchayat Accounts Assistants that was issued last week. Only two of them made to it and rest have been dropped. One candidate who has 93 in SKIMS list has scored only 20 points in Panchayat selection list.
Another important point is that majority of around 9000 who appeared in the examination only few have scored higher marks while there is no pattern as is seen in other selection lists of SKIMS or BOPEE. Majority of the students who appeared in examinations have scored around 40 marks and only few have scored above 80 and those have been selected.
With these discrepancies in the selection, students have started raising doubts and accuse paper leak. One such aspirants, Shahid Sheikh, told Excelsior that he was not selected in the SKIMS list but has figured in BOPEE list. “I wanted to study in a Government College as I have no money to study in private college where I got admission. My father is a farmer, he can’t afford Rs 75,000 fee”, he said.
