JAMMU, Mar 22: Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated “World Water Day” today on at Institutional Complex, Channi Himmat, Jammu by holding a Seminar on theme topic “Water and Jobs”.
The seminar was attended by a large number of engineers, hydrologist, NGOs, people from various departments, organizations and Senior citizens.
HB Khajuria, former Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control Department, Jammu was the chief guest and Dr Pottakkal George Jose, Scientist of Hydrology, Western Himalyana Regional Centre was the guest of honour on the occasion. The function was presided over by Ajay Gupta, Chairman of the Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre.
A total seven papers were presented engineers SC Thukral, PK Nanda, Vijay Kumar Sharma, P. Raja, KR Suri, Akash Dusgotra and Sunil Bhasin on the topic “Water and Jobs”.
The speakers emphasized on the judicial use of water and suggested various practices for water conservation and management. It was proposed in the seminar to integrate water and sustainable development on the foundation of social and environmental factors and participation of all the stakeholders in making it a reality.
They lamented the shrinking water resources in J&K in view of indiscriminate cutting of trees and reckless disposal of sewage and domestic wastes in these water resources and excessive use of pesticides and insecticides in their catchment areas. Some water management techniques which can be adopted by all individuals at home were also suggested by the speakers.
BL Rawal, honorary secretary conducted the proceedings of the seminar and presented the vote of thanks to the gathering. He made the audience aware by informing that if wastage of water is not checked, coming years will be very tough for the humanity due to absence of this commodity.
