KATRA, Mar 20: INTACH, in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), today organised a daylong workshop aimed at training volunteers in the awareness, conservation, and protection of tangible and intangible heritage.
A statement said that the workshop was inaugurated by Prof VK Bhat, Dean Faculty of Humanities, along with other distinguished guests, including Purnima Dutt, Principal Director, HECS, INTACH, and Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar SMVDU.
It said that in her keynote address, Purnima Dutt emphasized the need to preserve India’s unique culture and heritage through young heritage volunteers. Prof VK Bhat stressed the importance of involving students in heritage awareness, while Arvind Kotwal elaborated on the built heritage of Jammu and the need for its documentation and preservation.
The workshop also featured lectures on various aspects of heritage, including rural art, natural heritage, intangible heritage, and volunteerism, the press statement said.
It said that Dr Deepika Slathia highlighted the rich natural heritage of Jammu, including its unique flora and fauna, and emphasized the need to conserve wildlife, medicinal herbs, forests, and sacred groves.
Dr Sudhir Singh focused on intangible heritage, particularly crafts, while Abhishek Das from Heritage Education & Communication Service, INTACH, delivered a lecture on the importance of volunteerism, followed by group exercises, the statement further said.
It added that Dr Lalit Gupta stressed the need for involving youth in spreading awareness about heritage and proposed the establishment of a modern museum in Jammu to display artefacts, handlooms, crafts, and rare paintings.
The proceedings were conducted by Dr Rakesh Thussu, President, and Dr Kamni Pathania, Vice President, Board of Cultural Activities.
