LEH, Nov 16: Police busted inter-state ATM cloning gang with the arrest of two persons and recovery of cloning machine and other items, here today.
According to SSP Leh Dr Sunil Gupta, 10 people living in Leh complained to police regarding withdrawal of money from their accounts in National Capital Region (NCR), New Delhi without their consent and knowledge.
Acting over the complaints, a special team headed by DySP Headquarters Leh Peer Zahoor was constituted to investigate the matter, he added.
“During the course of investigation, police personnel were deployed at some selected ATM machines which were under police surveillance. After putting sustained and serious efforts, two persons hailing from Haryana and Delhi were arrested by the special team headed by DySP Headquarters Leh Zahoor Peer. There two associates are still at large and hunt has been launched to nab them”, SSP stated.
He added that ATM cloning machine, data cables, mobile phones, laptop, cloned ATMs and a diary having PIN numbers of the people were recovered from their possession.
A case under FIR Number 92/15 under Section 420 and 380 RPC was registered against them and further investigation into the case started, Dr Gupta added.
SSP further briefed that during further investigation, it came to fore that the accused use to come Leh for few days and during this period they choose some unguarded ATM machines and attach their cloning machine with it. Pretending themselves as customer, they entice genuine customers to insert their card into ATM machine (having cloning machine fitted with it) and at the same time they also note the PIN numbers of the customers by standing behind them, he added.
After getting all the details, they fled the area and with the help of cloned ATM card and PIN numbers, they withdraw money from the account of the people at NCR New Delhi and other parts of the Country, Dr Gupta stated.
SSP maintained that the gang was also active in different States of the Country including Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra, UP, Haryana and Delhi, where they use same technique to deceive people of their hard earned money. They are also wanted by police of different States and finally landed in the net of Leh police, he asserted.
Meanwhile, SSP Leh has appealed to the general public using ATM cards in Srinagar and Leh to immediately change PIN numbers/passwords so that chance of any fraudulently withdrawal from their accounts can be minimize.
