Inter-State gang of sapphire smugglers busted, one arrested

JAMMU, Sept 13: Police today busted an inter-State gang of sapphire smuggling and arrested one person from KC Chowk, falling under the jurisdiction of Bus-Stand Police Station.
A police spokesman said that, on specific information, police party from Bus Stand Police Station laid a naka at KC Chowk and during checking stopped Maruti SX4 bearing registration number DL5CK 0732.
During checking, police recovered 15 grams of unfinished small pieces of sapphire, which Geology and Mining Department has also confirmed, he said, adding that cost of sapphire in the international market is around Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per gram.
The smuggler identified as Mukesh Chand, son of Mool Chand of Delhi has been arrested, he said, adding that the arrested person use to purchase the sapphire from J&K and sale the same in other States of the country including Delhi.
A case under FIR number 42/13 and Section 4/5 Sapphire Act has been registered at Bus-Stand Police Station and investigation started to arrest other members of the inter-State gang.
Police party led by SHO Satvinder Singh made the arrest under the supervision of SDPO North Kulbir Handa and SP North Jatinder Singh Johar.
