JAMMU, July 21: NCC Unit of Government SPMR College of Commerce in collaboration with NSS and Eco Club under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, G20 and Mission Life organized one day seminar on millets and their promotion under the patronage of Dr Surinder Kumar, Principal of the college and Col R S Jasrotia, Commanding Officer of 2nd J&K Boys BN.
Dr Surinder Kumar, who was the chief guest on the occasion, formally inaugurated the programme. Prof (Dr) Meenakshi Gupta, Department of Agronomy, SKUAST University Jammu was the Resource Person.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Meenakshi elaborated the nutritional value of millets and highlighted various crops which can be a substitute for regular cereals consumed by people in general.
Dr Surinder Kumar emphasized on the cultivation of millets at a much larger scale keeping into consideration the depleting water resources and urged the NCC cadets and students to include millets as part of their routine dietary habits instead of commonly consumed junk food.
Prof. (Lt.) Savita Jamwal said that the observation of the Year of Millet will help in the promotion of millet production and consumption in the country and this will help the fight against hunger and mitigate climate change effects in the long run.
Dr Surinder Kumar lauded the efforts of ANO Prof Savita Jamwal, Prof Deepshikha Sharma, Prof Apfan Ali, NSS POs and Dr Deepak Pathania, Convener Eco Club for organizing the event.
The faculty members present on the occasion were Prof Barbara Kaul, HOD Commerce, Prof Ashu Manhas, Prof Reeta Menia, Dr Nazia Rasool, Dr Jagmeet Kaur, Prof Rajni Bala, Dr Deepak Pathania and Dr Sarabjeet Kour Sudan.
