BSF jawan succumbs

JAMMU, June 1: The Border Security Force (BSF) today gunned down an infiltrator at forward post of Chalyari in Samba sector in early hours of this morning while a BSF jawan, who was injured in Pakistan firing at Regal, Samba on May 30, succumbed to his injuries in the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital this morning.
Official sources said the BSF jawans of 182 battalion observed movement of intruders on Pakistan side of the International Border (IB) through Night Vision Devices at 12.30 am today.
The intruders were heading towards Pillar No. 179 along the IB at forward post of Chalyari in Samba sector. They were asked to surrender. However, as they continued to move towards the IB, the BSF personnel opened firing and gunned down one of them. Others retreated to Pakistan.
Sources said the Pakistani Rangers also opened firing for about 15 minutes reportedly with a view to give cover to the intruders but failed.
In the morning, the BSF jawans conducted searches along the IB and recovered body of the slain unidentified intruder. No incriminating documents were recovered from him, sources said.
A flag meeting of the level of Company Commander was held at the IB between BSF and Rangers this afternoon. The Rangers refused to accept dead body of the intruder saying he was not a Pakistani national.
The BSF protested ceasefire violation by the Rangers on the intervening night of May 29 and 30 and early hours of today. The Rangers, as usual, denied firing saying it could be handiwork of the infiltrators.
The BSF later handed shifted body of the intruder to hospital for post-mortem.
The security personnel also conducted searches in the border area this morning but didn’t find any traces of infiltration.
Meanwhile, a BSF jawan, who was seriously injured in firing by the Rangers at Regal Post in Samba sector on the intervening night of May 29 and 30, succumbed to his injuries in the Government Medical College hospital this morning after battling for life for two days.
The deceased jawan Deepak Singh son of Hari Singh R/o Agra, Uttar Pradesh had received bullet in his stomach in targeted firing by the Rangers.
The body was being sent to native town of the jawan after tributes by the BSF officers.
