JAMMU, July 29: Army foiled an infiltration attempt on the Line of Control (LoC) at forward village of Laleali in Akhnoor sector falling under the jurisdiction of Sunderbani Brigade and killed on intruder, who was trying to sneak into the Indian territory last night.
Official sources said the troops manning forward areas observed movement of the intruders at 8.30 pm in forward area of Laleali in Akhnoor sector and sounded an alert. They asked to intruders to stop but they started running back.
Army opened firing in which one intruder was killed, sources said, adding that other intruders might have managed to return to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Body of slain intruder has been recovered from the spot but it hasn’t been identified so far.
The intruder was wearing a pathan suit.
After the killing of one infiltrator, Army personnel conducted searches along the LoC in Akhnoor-Sunderbani sectors during the night, which lasted till this morning. However, no other movement of infiltrators was detected at any other place on the LoC during the searches.
There were also no reports of any successful infiltration, sources said.
Sources said no recoveries were made from the possession of slain intruder, whose identity hasn’t been established as he was not carrying any identity card with him. The intruder was, however, stated to be Pakistani. Army has handed over body of the intruder to local police.
There has been a spurt in infiltration attempts by the militants on the LoC in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri during the past sometime. The militants were trying to intrude sometimes on their own and on some occasion under the cover of Pakistan firing, sources said, adding all intrusion bids on the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri have been foiled this year.
“There has been increased activity of militants across the LoC. Militants in several groups have been camping in forward areas of PoK awaiting an opportunity to sneak into this side. However, the alert Army troops have not allowed the militants to succeed in their designs,” sources said.
They added that the Army personnel were anticipating more infiltration attempts by the militants in the coming days when there would be adverse weather conditions due to Monsoon clouds and rains. Already, there has been thick growth of vegetation and forest cover on the LoC.
A day before, a Pakistan Army jawan was killed and another injured after Indian troops retaliated their firing at Kirni Shahpur and Mandi sub sectors of Poonch district. In another incident of Pakistan firing the same day, a BSF jawan and a civilian were injured.
As reported, Army and BSF have been maintaining high alert along the LoC and IB respectively after inputs of large presence of militants across the LoC and Pakistan Army plans to give covering fire to them in the infiltration.
