Irate farmers protest, block highway

KATHUA, Apr 15: The irate farmers of Rajbagh and surrounding areas today staged a protest demonstration and blocked the Jammu -Pathankot National Highway for half an hour at Rajbagh in protest against the failure of Government to take necessary steps in assessing the losses suffered by farmers due to recent rains and hail storm.
Over 200 irate farmers of the area took to streets and blocked the NH for half an hour protesting against the callousness of the Government towards them. The protestors raising slogans against the authorities said that their entire crop of wheat was damaged in the rains and hailstorm and the farmers will face starvation in case the Government does not come their rescue.
The protestors said till date no efforts were made by the Government to assess the damages suffered by farmers in the area. They said except hollow claims and promises the Government failed to do any thing in practical. The protestors demanded that the farmers crops be insured in future and Government should make immediate assessment of losses suffered by the farmers and release relief.
The road blockade was lifted after the intervention of senior police and civil officers later.
