Samba, July 7: Residents of Ghagwal area in Samba today held a strong protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) for not replacing power transformer and blocked Jammu-Pathankot National Higway disrupting vehicular movement for half an hour.
The locals staged protest demonstration and raised slogans against PDD and demand early restoration of power supply to their area.
Protesters alleged that there was no power in some areas of Ghagwal and adjoining areas for the past one week and they had been reeling under constant darkness.
They said that power failure has thrown normal life out of gear. PDD authorities have failed to restore the power supply to the area which was snapped six days back due to damage of local transformer.
Locals said that they had informed the authorities concerned about the crisis but nothing has been done in this regard.
People of the area were facing worst problems in this hot and sweltering summer and we are passing sleepless nights in the absence of power. The position of old, infirm and children is worst as they can’t resist the scorching heat,” said Kartar Chand, a local resident.
“There is no power for more than a week and the PDD officials are acting as mute spectators. The situation has not improved despite repeated complaints,” said Tarsem Lal, another local.
Later, senior officials from police and district administration rushed the spot and pacified the protesters and assured immediate action in this regard.
