IT Deptt should focus on habitual tax evaders only: JCCI

JAMMU, Apr 6: Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) today stressed that Income Tax Department should focus on only those assessees who do not file returns at all rather than pressurizing and harassing the existing assessees who are already paying the tax honestly.
Addressing a press conference, JCCI president Rakesh Gupta said that majority of businessmen in Jammu have been paying income tax honestly and it was due to their cooperation that Income Tax Department has succeeded in making collection of Rs 1118 crore during the just concluded financial year.

“It is because of full cooperation extended by different sections of society in Jammu that not even a single income tax raid was done from July 2014 to March 2019 in Jammu”, he said, adding “we request the department to focus on those assesses who do not file returns at all rather than pressurizing and harassing the existing assesses who are already paying the tax honestly”.
The Chamber appreciated the awareness campaign launched by the Income Tax Department that resulted in adding 89000 new assessees.
He also appealed all the Bazar Associations to install CCTV cameras as security is the prime concern of one and all considering the prevailing law and order situation.
The JCCI President also appealed to all the eligible voters in the State to come out and vote for the candidates whoever they feel will deliver best to the society. “In a democracy if someone does not vote then they have no right to criticize those elected”, he further said, adding “everyone should exercise right to vote and elect the right people in the interest of peace and prosperity”.
