NEW DELHI: Reacting to the trends of the bye-elections to various Lok Sabha and assembly seats in the country, which showed the BJP either trailing or having lost to the opposition candidates, the Congress on Thursday said that it was the beginning of the end of the BJP.
Talking to reporters here, senior Congress leader and AICC spokesperson Pramod Tewari said, ”over the last few days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and BJP leaders have been talking about the achievement of the NDA Government over the last four years.
However, the trends of the by-elections to various lok Sabha and assembly seats across the country show that the people have rejected the claims of the BJP. The results show that the people have given a reply to the BJP for the misgovernance of the NDA Government on all fronts. This is the beginning of the end of the BJP.”
Results and counting trends of by-elections to five Lok Sabha seats and 11 assembly constituencies showed the BJP either trailing to the joint opposition candidates or having lost to them. The BJP was losing to the joint opposition RLD candidate in Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh while the by-election to Noorpur assembly seat saw the joint opposioton candidate from the Samajwadi Party defeating the BJP nominee.
The Bhandara-Gondiya Lok sabha seat in Maharashtra saw the NCP candidate ahead of the BJP while the Jokihat assembly seat in Bihar saw the RJD candidate ahead of the JD-U candidate.
”The public has voted to defeat the BJP in the by-elections. In most by-elections it is either the Congress candidate or the Congress-supported nominee that is ahead of the BJP nominee,” Mr Tewari said.
Charging the PM of lowering the dignity of his post by holding a roadshow in Baghpat a day with a clear eye at the Kairana Lok Sabha by-election, in utter violation of the model code of conduct, Mr Tewari said ,”it is a clear sign of frustration over certain defeat of the BJP in the by-election.
The PM violated the model code of conduct and lowered the dignity of his post.” Mr Tewari said that it was a clear sense of frustration that has led the NDA Governmet to file an appeal in the court for carrying out raids on the Congress leader DK Shivakumar in Karnataka and file a case against senior congress leader P Chidambaram in the Aircel maxis case.
