Jai Anusandhan

Sir,
This has reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new slogan -Jai Anusandhan (Victory to Research) given at 106th Indian Science Congress in Jalandhar (DE January 4). Our leaders have given a number of slogans to motivate public and their followers but it is a pity that the people to whom these slogans are addressed to don’t get inspired and do little to realise the dreams of these leaders and turn them into reality by changing their attitude and behaviour. Research in science is posible only when people have a scientific temperament and rational thinking. Article 51 (A) (h) of the Constitution states, “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop the scientific temper; humanism, and the spirit of enquiry and reforms.” In a country where most of our leaders who too are citizens and are supposed to serve as role models and set an example in spirit of enquiry, rational thinking and scientific temperament are themselves slaves of rituals, traditions and superstitions; hence fail to inspire public and inculcate these much needed qualities to develop an atmosphere of research. Even many among the highly qualified scientific community engaged in research and development lack scientific temperament, rational thinking and spirit of enquiry and continue to follow superstitions as a matter of faith and belief system. Superstitious, credulous, and slavish Indian mentality needs radical transformation for research to be victorious. Modern research can be carried on modern scientific lines only and mere claims of rich scientific heritage and glorious past on the basis of mythology without inculcating scientific temperament and creating conducive atmosphere for research can’t be a substitute. All the necessary steps need to be undertaken to create conditions for victory to Jawan, Kisan and vigyan to implement these slogans.
