President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday paid tributes to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that had taken place a 100 years ago and called it a horrific massacre, a stain on civilisation.
A 100 years ago today, our beloved freedom fighters were martyred at Jallianwala Bagh. A horrific massacre, a stain on civilisation, that day of sacrifice can never be forgotten by India. At this solemn moment, we pay our tribute to the immortals of Jallianwala,? the President said in a tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tributes to those who sacrificed in the massacre. Today, when we observe 100 years of the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre, India pays tributes to all those martyred on that fateful day. Their valour and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their memory inspires us to work even harder to build an India they would be proud of.
Today is the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on this day in 1919, the British forces massacred innocent people at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. The sacrifices of martyrs will always be remembered by a grateful country.
Remembering the martyrs, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted that the sacrifice and bravery of the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh will never be forgotten. My tribute to all the brave hearts.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said: ?On the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, we bow our heads in remembrance.
Even after the 100 years, the British Government felt regretted for the episode but did not apologise for it.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre had taken place on April 13, 1919 and was ordered by General R E H Dyer. Colonel Dyer fired rifles into a crowd of Indians, who had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh for a peaceful protest to condemn the arrest and deportation of two national leaders, Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew. In the bloodbath more than 1,500 people were killed. (UNI)
