Jallikattu ban

Sir,
The Supreme Court has done well to stay the Centres notification on Jallikattu. By overturning the SC’s ban, the ruling BJP, in haste, had given the nod for the conduct of the bull taming sport in Tamilnadu to gain political mileage ahead of Assembly elections in the State. Also local political parties in Tamilnadu, which have been batting for this sport under the cover of culture and tradition, have actually been doing so with ulterior motive of cashing in on votes.
No doubt,  jallikattu is a maddening and dangerous sport, where bulls are kicked, punched and dragged to the ground. They are deliberately disoriented by being given alcohol and having their tails painfully cut. Such acts are flagrant Violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. When culture and tradition are at variance with the law enacted by the Parliament, the law should take precedence.
Yours etc….
