Jammu declared smoke free district

JAMMU, Dec 3: On the basis of survey conducted by Drug and Food Control Organization in district Jammu regarding enforcement of provisions of Section 4 and 6 (a,b) of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act-2003, Jammu district has been declared as ‘Smoke Free’ by Additional District Magistrate, Jammu, Kalyan Singh Parihar in a meeting of senior officers convened under his chairmanship.
The meeting was attended by Chief Planning Officer Jammu, CMO Jammu, Deputy Director Information Jammu, SDPO North, AD Planning, (Education Department) besides officers of other concerned departments.
It was apprised that more than 90 percent of the public places complied with the smoke free rules. ADC, Jammu said cent percent compliance is expected in the coming time adding that the need of the hour is to create greater awareness amongst the general masses about the ill effects of the tobacco and its related products on the human health and environment. He sought the support of cross-sections of society in changing mindset of the people and to deal with the menace of tobacco and drug abuse which is causing destruction for the younger generation too.
Describe the consumption of tobacco in any form as a life threatening affair, the ADC said that it is the moral responsibility of enforcement agencies as well as citizens of the civil society to actively involve themselves besides come up with an effective strategy in this regard.
‘He asked the designated law enforcers to conduct random checks at public places and challan/fine the violators of the law and ensure that no consumption or sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products take place under their jurisdiction in any of the public place of Jammu district. He asked them to install sign boards, hoardings etc at prominent places depicting messages and pictures regarding ill effects of smoking.
