Thick clouds of fog envelop region

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Dec 17: The Jammu City today experienced coldest day of the season so far besides thick clouds of fog during while Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.8 degree Celsius temperature on Thursday, indicating further fall in temperature during next week.
Cold wave conditions have intensified in Kashmir as the minimum temperature settled several degrees below the freezing point across the valley.
A MeT official has forecast a further dip in the minimum temperature across Kashmir in the next few days, he said
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, down by 1.7 degrees from the previous night’s minus 2.1 degrees Celsius.
This was the second coldest night of the season so far in the city which has witnessed a low of minus 3.9 degree Celsius 48 hours ago.
World famous tourist resort, Gulmarg in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, up from minus 10 degrees Celsius previous night.
The official said Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius. The south Kashmir resort had recorded minus 6.9 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The mercury in Kupwara in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, recorded minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag also recorded a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, the official added.
The Jammu city recorded 4.0 degree Celsius temperature during last night which is lowest of the season so far. It was nearly 5 degrees below normal temperature in Jammu. The day temperature in Jammu was 15.1 degree Celsius today which was again nearly 6 degrees below normal.
Thick clouds of fog during morning hours in Jammu and other adjoining areas, badly hit the train and vehicular traffic. Due to poor visibility the normal life was affected. It also intensified the cold conditions in Jammu, Samba and Kathua areas.
Holy township of Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 3.5 deg C, tourist resort Bhaderwah minus 2.2 deg C, Batote minus 1.5 deg while Banihal had minus 3.6 degree Celsius temperature last night.
Leh town recorded a minimum temperature of minus 14.1 deg C while Kargil town minus 11.6 degree C temperature today.
The MeT office has predicted light rain and snow on the higher reaches across J&K tonight but mainly clear weather in Srinagar and most parts of Jammu during next 24 hours. Even it has forecast mainly clear weather in the region up to December 21. However, dense fog would continue to persist in mainly plain areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua.
