JAMMU, Oct 8: Dr Mukesh Chugh, a consultant anesthetist based in the United Kingdom and originally from Shastri Nagar (Jammu), was recently honored with the prestigious MRANI Award for his exceptional service to the community.
The award ceremony, held recently at the iconic Titanic Belfast, was co-hosted by BBC broadcaster Lata Sharma and the dynamic Ibe Sesay, both of whom captivated the audience with their charisma.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr Chugh is a dedicated advocate for ethnic minority communities, actively promoting cultural diversity and integration. His outstanding efforts in fostering interfaith harmony earned him the Points of Light Award from the UK Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, as well as the Anti-Racism Leader of the Year award (NWMF). These accolades highlight his unwavering commitment to strengthening community cohesion.
Further recognizing his dedication to his city, Dr Chugh was named an Ambassador of Visit Derry, reflecting his efforts to unite and celebrate its multi-ethnic heritage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a crucial role in increasing vaccination uptake within the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, leading outreach initiatives and appearing in poster campaigns and video messages for the Department of Health, Northern Ireland, to raise awareness about immunization.
Dr Chugh’s community service is matched by his advocacy for healthcare workers. He founded the Northern Ireland chapter of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) and was elected honorary secretary of the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA). His global impact extends to India, where he facilitated the delivery of BIPAP ventilators to support the country’s COVID-19 response.
In his professional capacity, Dr Chugh’s roles are both varied and impactful. He serves as a GMC UK trainer, a PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) examiner, and SALG patient safety lead.
His contributions to audits and studies conducted by NCEPOD UK further demonstrate his commitment to enhancing patient safety and care.
