JAMMU, Sept 24: The family members, relatives and neighbours of the woman, who died yesterday at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu after she consumed some poisonous substance the day before yesterday following an altercation with her neighbour over land, blocked the Jammu-Poonch National Highway (NH) for about two hours demanding arrest of all the accused persons.
According to reports, the victim identified as Rupali Devi (25) wife of Bodh Raj and resident of Batehra, had an altercation with her neighbour on Monday over some land following which she consumed some poisonous substance. In serious condition, the family members shifted her to GMCH, Jammu, where she breathed her last, yesterday afternoon.
Today, the family members, relatives and neighbours of the deceased woman along with her dead body blocked Jammu-Poonch National Highway at Batehra demanding the police to register a case of abetment to suicide against the three accused namely Surinder Singh, son of Shaiv Singh, his wife Rekha Devi and younger brother, Virender Singh, all residents of Batehra and neighbours of the deceased woman.
As the deceased woman was an Asha worker, about 50 Asha workers also joined the protest and demanded immediate arrest of all the three accused.
The protestors disrupted the traffic movement on busy Jammu-Poonch National Highway for about two hours and raised slogans against the police for not taking action against the accused.
On getting information, SHO, Police Station Kanachak, Rakesh Sharma reached the spot but failed to pacify the protestors, who refused to remove the body from the road and cremate it. But when SP Rural, ML Kaith and SDPO Domana Sanjay Parihar reached the spot and assured that all the three accused would be arrested soon, the protestors dispersed with the dead body and later cremated it.
When contacted, SP Rural, ML Kaith told that an FIR under RPC 306 had already been registered and Surinder Singh, one of the accused was arrested yesterday, but as the family members were unaware of that fact, they resorted to blocking of road.
However, when they were apprised of the fact, they shun protest and dispersed, he said, adding though the other two accused are at large but all efforts are on to nab both of them.
He also informed that a case of thrashing following land dispute between the two parties was also registered in 2013, which is still in the court.
