Dense fog hits air, train traffic in region

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Dec 17 : Even as the sky remained clear for the last few days, the night temperature has gone further down across Kashmir with Srinagar recording lowest temperature at minus 6.4 degree Celsius while Jammu recorded this season’s lowest temperature of 3.0 degree Celsius today.
Official sources said that in view of the dense fog in Jammu areas during morning hours, one SpiceJet flight was cancelled while seven flights were delayed due to poor visibility at Jammu Airport. Most of the flights could land at Jammu Airport after 12 noon as the visibility improved.
Airport authorities at Jammu said that seven flights were delayed by 1.5 to 6.5 hours today due to bad weather. Eight flights operated at normal schedule while one flight was diverted to Delhi and two Go Air flights to Srinagar due to poor visibility at Jammu Airport in the morning.
The train service in the region was also affected due to dense fog in Jammu, Punjab and Haryana areas. Most of the trains were late by one to four hours at Jammu Railway Station. Timings of some trains were being rescheduled, a Railways spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Jammu recorded season’s lowest temperature of 3.0 degree Celsius today which is nearly 5.9 degree Celsius below normal. The day temperature in Jammu was 12.7 degree C. On Wednesday, Jammu had recorded 5.0 degree Celsius temperature during night.
Holy township of Katra today also recorded minimum 3.0 degree C temperature, Bhaderwah town minus 3.3 degree C and Batote minus 1.2 degree Celsius temperature.
The Meteorological department said that a significant dip in the night temperature was recorded last night across Kashmir and Ladakh. The parts of Dal lake were frozen this morning due to the cold.
The MeT Deputy Director, Mukhtar Ahmad said that the night temperature would go further down in the Valley in the coming days, adding that there is possibility of improvement in the night temperature on December 20-21 when higher reaches would most likely experience light rain or snowfall.
He also stated that there is no prediction of any major rain or snowfall till December 25-26.
The night temperature at world famous ski-resort, Gulmarg settled at minus 11 degree Celsius while in Pahalgam it was recorded minus 8.9 degree Celsius. In Kupwara, the night temperature settled at minus 5.8 degree Celsius while in Kokernag it was recorded minus 4.8 degree Celsius.
