SSH, Psychiatric hospital being opened for non-COVID patients

JAMMU, June 2: Jammu today reported seven casualties, lowest in the past 40 days and 585 new cases. As fresh cases eased, the administration in the Government Medical College (GMC) and Associated Hospital has initiated the process of de-notifying the COVID dedicated hospitals to resume Super Specialties for non-COVID patients. Five among the dead were woman including the one whose husband had succumbed to the virus only four days back.
Eight COVID casualties were reported in the Jammu region on April 25 and since then the deaths kept rising and daily toll even crossed 50 many times. Today’s seven deaths were lowest since April 25. This is also for the first time in past 35 days that the region reported fatalities in single digit. In another first in the last 45 days only one Corona death was reported in the GMC Jammu. However, there were three casualties in GMC Kathua and two in GMC Rajouri today.
“To begin with Psychiatric Hospital is being opened for patients and OPD from tomorrow after shifting COVID patients to other dedicated hospitals. The patients of Psychiatric Hospital, who had been shifted to Ayurvedic Hospital, are being brought back,” GMC Principal Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma told the Excelsior.
She said within next two days all Super Specialties in the Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) will also be resumed for non-COVID patients. The Super Specialties which will resume from the SSH Resham Ghar include Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology and Urology. The COVID patients admitted in the SSH are being shifted to the GMC Jammu.
Dr Sharma said the two hospitals were being de-notified as 500-bedded DRDO’s COVID hospital at Bhagwati Nagar has started functioning.
“Today, we admitted two COVID patients in the DRDO hospital,” the GMC Jammu Principal said, adding new cases will be admitted in the DRDO besides other COVID dedicated hospitals.
GMC Jammu, Chest Diseases (CD) Hospital and Maternity and Child Care (MCH) Gandhi Nagar still have COVID patients but the rush has eased to quite an extent now as the fresh cases have come down between 500-600 daily as compared to 1500-1800 in the middle of May.
With the sudden onset of second COVID wave in Jammu when large number of patients reporting to the hospitals, the administration in GMC Jammu and Associated Hospitals had stopped OPD services and elective and other surgeries and declared five Government hospitals within the City as COVID dedicated hospitals in the first week of May.
Meanwhile, seven persons died of COVID-19 in the Jammu region today including three In Kathua district and two each in Jammu and Rajouri. They include five women.
A 70-year-old woman from Thanna Mandi in Rajouri district succumbed to the virus in the GMC Rajouri. Her husband had died of virus four days back. Family members of the woman protested against the GMC Rajouri administration for delaying the oxygen cylinder to the woman resulting into her death. They demanded action against the administration.
A 65-year-old woman from Ward No. 12 Manjakote also breathed her last because of COVID-19 in the GMC Rajouri.
Two deaths were reported from Ward No. 3 in Kathua including a 44-year-old and another 65-year-old woman while a man died of Coronavirus in Billawar.
A 50-year-old man from Raipur Satwari died of COVID in the GMC Jammu while 58-year-old woman passed away in the Military Hospital Satwari.
Seven fresh casualties have taken Jammu region’s Corona casualties to 1932, the highest being 1078 in Jammu district followed by 188 Rajouri, 135 Kathua, 126 Udhampur, 112 Samba, 90 Doda, 79 Poonch, 53 Ramban, 37 Reasi and 34 in Kishtwar district.
Meanwhile, an Army Colonel posted at Satwari Cantonment and eight members of a prominent businessman’s family putting up at Vinayak Bazaar along Akhnoor road tested positive for the virus today. Seven members of the businessman’s family, however, reported negative. Their one of the family members had a day before died at New Delhi due to COVID-19.
Among 585 fresh cases registered today, Jammu district accounted for 169, Rajouri 75, Poonch 62, Udhampur 57, Doda 52, Ramban 49, Samba 41, Kishtwar 33, Kathua 25 and Reasi 22.
As many as 1327 recoveries which were more than double the fresh positive cases reported today include 485 in Jammu district, 207 Rajouri, 123 Kathua, 107 Udhampur, 77 Doda, 74 Kishtwar, 71 Ramban, 66 Samba, 59 Reasi and 58 Poonch.
Jammu region now has 1,12,945 Corona cases. Of them, 11480 are active positives while 99533 have recovered from the virus and there have been 1932 casualties.
Meanwhile, the Union Territory of Ladakh today reported one Corona fatality and 88 new cases.
The casualty was reported from Kargil district where a 100-year-old man succumbed to the virus at village Lankoor.
Out of 88 new cases, 71 were reported in Leh district and 17 in Kargil.
Lone casualty today has taken Corona toll in Ladakh to 190—136 in Leh and 54 in Kargil while the Corona cases have hone up to 18750 including 1581 active positives and 16979 recoveries.
