Srinagar, Oct 26:  With the improvement in weather, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) was thrown open for traffic today after remaining shut overnight due to landslides and shooting stones.
An official told Excelsior that the highway was thrown open this morning. He said the highway was cleared of all the stranded vehicles and the movement continued smoothly throughout the day.
Due to landslides and shooting stones, the Srinagar-Jammu NH was closed for traffic yesterday. The Mughal Road and Srinagar-Leh highway, however, remain closed for the traffic due to heavy snowfall.
Kashmir Valley witnessed a steep decline in the mercury due to snowfall. The region is in the grip of cold wave but with the slight improvement in weather, the temperature also increased by few degrees. A Meteorological Department official told Excelsior that the maximum day temperature was recorded 14.5 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg continues to shiver at 0.6 degree Celsius while the night temperature was recorded at -3 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has forecast light rains for next 24 hours in the Valley. “The effect of western disturbance that approached the State couple of days ago and caused rains and snow would diminish from tomorrow forenoon”, the weatherman said.
Meanwhile, there will be one-way traffic movement on highway from Srinagar to Jammu on October 31, November 1, 7 and 8 in view of the bi-annual Durbar move.
