Jammu traders gherao Speaker; demands GST implementation

JAMMU:   Hundreds of traders today took out a protest march and gheraoed Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta, demanding implementation of Goods and Service Tax in Jammu and Kashmir.

Shouting slogans, traders from Nehru Market, this afternoon took out a rally demanding rolling out of the GST in the state. Meanwhile, agitating traders ‘gheraoed’ the Speaker who was on his way to his residence.

”Government has decided to bring in the Bill in the Assembly but the decision will be taken only after four-day special session from July 4 having debate on GST,” Mr Gupta told reporters here. He said there was no clarity in the state on Income Tax but if it gets passed in the Assembly, it will be in the interest of the State.

”Once it will be passed unanimously, nobody can oppose even those raising objections on its implementation,” said the Speaker.

Pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir has missed the July 1 deadline but special session from July 4 to 8 will be held in Srinagar to hold discussions on its implementation in the state.
