9 flights cancelled, 13 trains delayed due to fog

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Jan 19: Nine flights were cancelled and 13 trains delayed due to fog in Jammu and northern region while Jammu experienced a sharp fall in temperature today, whereas, Meteorological (MeT) department forecast wet weather from January 25 and the end of long dry weather in the region by the month end.
MeT Director Mukhtar Ahmad today said the wet phase is likely to begin from Thursday as light snow is expected at isolated higher reaches on January 25.
“For the next two days- from January 26 -28, light rain or snow is expected over scattered places,” he said.
“From January 29-31, as per indications of different models, the possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places is very likely,” he added.
The winter capital- Jammu was currently under severe cold wave. The City recorded a sharp fall in day’s temperature today and recorded 9.6 degrees Celsius as per Chatha observatory of SKUAST, against Thursday’s temperature of 19.4 degrees C. The MeT department, however, recorded a maximum temperature of 13.7 and minimum 5.0 degree C today against the night temp of 5.7 degree C yesterday. The Chatha observatory however, has recorded a minimum temperature of 2.4 degree C today.
Holy township of Katra recorded a minimum temperature of 6.4 and maximum 18.6 deg C, Bhaderwah a night temperature of -0.4 deg C and day temperature of 14.6 while Banihal town a minimum temperature of -0.8 and maximum 17.1 deg C temperature today.
An official at Jammu Airport said that due to fog and poor visibility during morning hours in Jammu and parts of northern region, nine flights were cancelled today and six others were delayed. He disclosed that five IndiGo, two Air India, one SpiceJet and one Vistara flights were cancelled at Jammu Airport today. The other flights were delayed by an one hour to three hours or even more.
A Northern Railways spokesman said that 13 trains were delayed and Andaman Express (16032) was cancelled today at Jammu station. He disclosed that arrival of Amarnath Express was delayed by 7 hours, Jhelum Express by 6 hours, Uttar Sampark Kranti by 5 hours; Malwa, Puja Exp and Shalimar Exp by 4 hours; Swaraj Exp, Tata Muri, Hemkund, Shri Shakti and Begumpura by 3 hours, Sealdah Exp by two hours while Vande Bharat by one hour today.
Meanwhile, Kashmir valley is currently grappling with an alarming situation due to prolonged dry spell and the absence of rainfall and snowfall has triggered alarm bells among the residents and the Government in the region.
The 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ is ending on January 30 and so far, there has been no major snowfall anywhere in the Kashmir valley.
The minimum temperatures dropped further last night while the day temperatures continue to stay above normal for the region.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius as against minus 4.6 degrees Celsius during the previous night.
Pulwama at minus 6.9 degrees Celsius was the coldest place in Kashmir
Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.3 degrees, while Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 5 degrees Celsius
Gulmarg recorded a low of -3.6°C and Kupwara recorded -5 °C.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 12.4 degree Celsius temperature today which was 6.0 degree Celsius above normal for the city for this time of the year.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.3 degree Celsius which is 6.3 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Kupwara recorded a maximum of 12.1 degree Celsius which is 5.5 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Kokernag recorded a maximum of 11.1 degree Celsius which is 6.6 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 5.7 degree Celsius which is 5.0 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
