Jawahar tunnel to remain open round the clock from today

SRINAGAR: Jawahar tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which connects Kashmir valley with rest of the country, will remain open round the clock to facilitate passengers, essential supplies, and transportation of fruits from today.

The national highway was closed for over a week in view of unrest triggered by the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani and two other militants in an encounter on July 8. The traffic on the highway was resumed after a week. But, after separatists asked people to travel only during the night on the highway, traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was allowed to ply during the day only.

According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic, J&K, with a view to facilitative passengers, essential supplies, and transportation of fruits, both tubes of the Jawahar tunnel shall remain open from today till further orders.

Zonal IGP’s of Kashmir and Jammu have been asked to direct Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) concerned to make all the requisite police arrangements for safe passage of traffic in their respective jurisdictions, besides providing necessary police assistance to Traffic Police personnel for strict implementation of the above schedule.
