JAMMU, Apr 6: Social activist Jayesh Gupta today expressed serious concern over the non-functional lights in streets and parks across the city.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta condemned the authorities for their negligence, stating that nearly 80% of the lighting fixtures in parks and streets are non-functional.
He emphasized that while installing lights is commendable, their maintenance is paramount to ensuring public safety and accessibility.
Gupta accused officials of wasting public funds on unnecessary new purchases while neglecting the upkeep of existing installations.
He highlighted growing safety concerns, noting that the lack of functional lights discourages women from going on early morning or late evening walks.
Apart from lighting issues, Gupta also condemned the administration’s decision to repurpose numerous playgrounds into parks.
He said, “In the past, Jammu had ample play areas for children, but most have now been converted, leaving young ones with fewer opportunities for outdoor recreation. This has resulted in children spending excessive time on mobile devices, laptops and television.”
“At least 50% of the playgrounds should be preserved for children to engage in outdoor activities, fostering their health and well-being,” he demanded and urged the administration to take immediate steps to ensure that every local community has a dedicated playground for children.
