JAMMU, Oct 15: Jammu Doctors Forum (JDF) has strongly condemned a recent statement given by Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Chief Minister of Delhi, regarding the role of male gynaecologists, in Doda district.
Kejriwal’s remarks, in which he questioned the practice of male doctors providing gynaecological services to women, have sparked widespread outrage within the medical community and among patients, said JDF president Dr Satya Dev Gupta while addressing a press conference today. He was accompanied by vice-president Dr Varinder Sharma, general secretary Dr Dushyant Chowdhry and senior gynaecologist, Dr RC Sharma.
The JDF termed Kejriwal’s statement as “illogical and absurd,” emphasizing that the medical profession is inherently gender-neutral and should be focused solely on skill, expertise, and patient care. The Forum criticized the comments as being against medical ethics and warned that such statements could lead to unnecessary divisions and unrest within society.
Doctors working in remote areas like Doda and Bhadarwah often perform under challenging conditions, providing essential care to both men and women. According to the JDF, Kejriwal’s remarks have created unwarranted discomfort among female patients, suggesting male doctors are somehow less trustworthy or competent in the field of gynaecology.
“We demand an unconditional apology from Arvind Kejriwal for his misleading and divisive statement, which undermines the credibility of male gynaecologists, many of whom are highly regarded professionals serving society with dedication,” the JDF said. The Forum pointed to well-known male gynaecologists from the region, including Dr Ajay Wakhloo, Dr Kasturi Lal, Dr Sunil Chowdhary, and others, whose reputations and service in women’s healthcare are beyond question.
The Forum further noted that some of the greatest contributors to Indian medicine, such as Sushruta, Caraka, and Vagbhata, were male, underlining that competence in the medical field transcends gender. In light of the controversy, the JDF has appealed to the public to see through what it called “nefarious designs” behind Kejriwal’s statement, urging people to reject any attempt to divide society along gender lines.
