SRINAGAR, Apr 8: A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander was killed in an encounter at Arampora village of Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told Excelsior that JeM commander Sajad Nawab Dar resident of Saidpora Sopore was killed in an encounter today.
The operation was launched by the security forces including police, 22 RR of Army and CRPF last evening after credible inputs that a group of militants were hiding in Gulabad, Arampora area of Sopore. Click here to watch video
During the search operation, the hiding militant fired on the search party leading to a gun battle. The operation was put on hold during the night and was resumed in the morning.
There were some people trapped in the area when the firing took place. The security forces evacuated these people first before targeting the militant.
The IGP said that in the morning, the militant hurled a grenade on the security forces and later opened fire on them which was retaliated. “In the exchange of firing, the house in which he was hiding caught fire”, he said.
He added that the militant was later killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. “Incriminating materials and arms and ammunitions including one AK-47 rifle, one AK-magazine, one UBGL Thrower were recovered from the site of the gun battle”, he said.
A police spokesman said that as per police records, he was affiliated with JeM and was wanted by law for his complicity in crimes including attacks on security establishments. “He was also involved in recruitment of youth for joining militancy in North Kashmir,” he added.
According to the police records, Sajad had a history of militancy since 2018. Several militancy related cases were registered against him including (Case FIR No. 69/2019 pertaining to attack on CRPF Camp at Main Chowk Sopore, FIR No. 70/2019) one another pertaining to attack on Police Post Warpora, Sopore.
The operation against the militants was launched last night after the security forces got information that 4-5 militants of JeM are hiding in the village.
The operation comes a few days after killing of five militants in Kupwara district of North Kashmir when they had infiltrated into the forest area.
