NEW DELHI:Minister of State for PMO and Nuclear Energy Dr Jintendra Singh refused to reply to the remarks made by former Pakistan president Pervez Musharaf about the use of the neighbouring country’s nuclear arsenal.
However, Mr Singh reiterated India’s commitment for use of nuclear capabilities for peaceful purpose. Addressing a press conference here today for high-lighting achievements of the Nuclear Energy Department during the last one year, Mr Singh said I do not want to enter in debate with the neighbouring nation, let the Defence Ministry or the other concerned office respond to the remarks, if they wanted to do so”.
He also refused to draw a comparison between nuclear capabilities of India with other nations including China and Pakistan.
“India has one of the best nuclear capabilities of the world”, Mr Singh however, asserted.
The Minister said “India is committed on the use its nuclear capabilities for peaceful purposes”, he added.
Former Pakistan president Mr Musharraf recently accused India of destabilising Pakistan and threaterned nuclear arms are for the defence of the country and not for celebratory occasions.
He said “we are moving fast for achieving the target set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attain three fold increase in our nuclear power capability by 2023-24”.
He said the Nuclear Power Corporation has achieved all time high power generation mark of 37,835 million units in 2014-15. Mr Singh said 1000 MW Kudankulam unit-one has already been commissioned in December last year the second unit of this mega power plant of Tamil Nadu is getting close to commissioning and that is expected in a couple of months.
He said that country had attained another feat of its sort, for the first time in the Asia and second in the world, as the Rajasthan Atomic Power Stations(RAPS) unit five had recorded a continuous run of 765 days.
At least four more nuclear plants have also recorded continuous run of more than one year, he added. The Nuclear Power Corporation India Limited has also recorded 400 reactor years of safe operations of the reactors by the end of the year 2014, he said adding that it reflected degree of accuracy and safety in our nuclear plants’ operations.
The upcoming Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant twin units seven and eight have achieved physical progress of 47 per cent and those are expected to be completed by 2018-19.
