JAMMU, May 19: In a bid to forge unity among all organizations of STs, SCs and OBCs, a day long convention was organized here today by the Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar United Front.
Heads of various organizations, prominent leaders, social activists, professionals, Sarpanchs and Panchs participated in the convention, which was held under the chairmanship of Advocate Shah Mohd Chowdhary, president of the Front.
The leaders discussed present political, economic and social scenarios of weaker sections in the State and identified some major grey areas for sustained struggle. The issues which assumed prominence in the convention for future course of action were; political reservation to STs in the State Legislature, reservation at State, block and district level Panchayati Raj Institutions for weaker sections, removing imbalances in recruitments and promotions to various State services, due representations to all weaker sections in the PSC and SSRB.
The convention regretted the alleged mis-utilisation of Central funds and demanded segregating these funds out of approved State plan by the PCI as per population of SCs and STs in the State to safeguard and protect the interest of these communities. The leaders in the convention pointed out that the special recruitment drive, backdoor and contractual appointments carried out from time to time, particularly in the police, have completely deprived the weaker sections of their constitutional rights.
The convention unanimously resolved to constitute a “Coordination Committee” under the chairmanship of Shah Mohd Chowdhary.
Those who spoke in the convention included Haji Hashim Ali, Haji Mohd Hussain Ex-MLC, Hussain Mohd, Mohd Alam, R L Jangral, Roop Lal Advocate, Ghulab Hussain, Ashok Basotra Advocate, R K Kalsotra (President SC/ST/OBC Confederation), Pritam Dass, Deedar Hussain, Showket Gujjar, Shabir Ahmad, Abid Hussain, Alam Hussain Sarpanch, Ch Maqbool Ahmad, Ch Rehmat Ali and others.
