The Para Archers of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Sports Complex, Katra, have made history by winning one Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze medal in the Pilsen 2023 World Archery Para Championships. Indian compound archers Sarita and Rakesh Kumar secured the country’s first-ever gold medal in the championship. Additionally, a 16-year-old armless archer named Sheetal Devi from Jammu and Kashmir’s mountainous district of Kishtwar won the compound women’s individual silver medal, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination. Apart from her individual success, Sarita also contributed to the women’s team’s bronze medal along with her teammate Jyoti.
It is indeed heartening and inspiring to witness the exceptional performance of the Para Archers from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on the global stage, where they have achieved remarkable success and made the entire nation proud. Their achievement becomes even more significant as they have accomplished it despite facing challenges related to limited resources and facilities. It’s commendable that the authorities and organisations involved in supporting these young athletes recognised their potential and provided them with the necessary support to participate in the Pilsen event. Such encouragement and backing from the authorities play a crucial role in nurturing talent and helping athletes reach their full potential.
