JAMMU, Apr 13: The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regimental Centre today celebrated ‘Zorawar Day’ to commemorate the heroism of General Zorawar Singh, one of the greatest military leaders in the history of India.
General Zorawar Singh was born in 1786 in a humble family from Kahloor in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. He joined service in the Army of Maharaja Gulab Singh as a soldier and rose to the rank of a General. General Zorawar Singh led a strong Dogra force across the Zanskar ranges for the conquest of Ladakh in 1834. He led a number of military campaigns with great success in extreme inhospitable terrains and perfidious weather conditions. He remains the only military leader of his time whose campaigns assimilated Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Tibet. For his feats in the battlefield, the General was given the sobriquet of the “Little Napoleon of India”.
The birth anniversary celebrations commenced with paying floral tribute to the martyrs of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment at War Memorial by Colonel Anil Dev Swami, Dy Commandant Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regimental Centre, on behalf of Brigadier Rajesh Sharma, Commandant Jammu and Kashmir Rifle Regimental Centre.
The Dy Commandant highlighted the valour of General Zorawar Singh as being one of the greatest warriors of the 18th Century.
The event concluded with a solemn pledge by all ranks to live up to the teachings and values of the noble and brave soul.
On this occasion, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Vice Chief of Army Staff and Colonel of the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles Regiment & Ladakh Scouts and Lt Gen P S Shekhawat, General Officer Commanding, Madhya Bharat Area, conveyed their special greetings to all ranks of the regiment.
