JAMMU, Mar 27: To commemorate the World Theatre Day, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) today held separate functions at Srinagar and Jammu during which deliberations were held on various dimensions of progression of theatre.
Held at KL Saigal Hall under the theme ‘Theatre in Jammu: challenges and opportunities’, the event was presided over by noted Dogri author, ND Jamwal. Secretary, JKAACL, Dr Aziz Hajini and former Secretary, JKAACL, Prof Rita Jitendra, were also in the presidium. The main highlight of the event at Jammu was the introductory paper by Dr Lalit Gupta.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Hajini said that by opening Abhinav Theatre at Jammu and Tagore Hall at Srinagar the Academy had discharged its duty of a facilitator for the progression of theatre.
“Through our auditoria we are providing artists avenues of expression. Now they should come forward as it is upto them to use our stage for showcasing their artistic talent,” Hajini said.
Coinciding with the event at Jammu, a similar function was held at Tagore Hall Srinagar which was also attended by theatre lovers in large numbers. Held under the title ‘Theatre in Kashmir: challenges and opportunities’ the function at Srinagar started with an introductory paper by noted playwright Mohammed Amin Bhat.
As part of the function a book by broadcaster-playwright, Dr Sohan Lal Kaul, was also released. Titled ‘Naad’, the book is a collection of five stage dramas of Kaul comprising ‘Ba Kus Chhus’, ‘Local Taxes Extra’, ‘Naad’, ‘Marnuyi Chhu Behtar’ and ‘Sarkar’.
Playwright Mohammed Amin Bhat, who presented a paper on the essence of World Theatre Day, also read an in-depth paper on Kaul’s ‘Naad’. The book release event was presided over by noted actor Zamir Ashai. Artist, Ayash Arif, and broadcaster, Nissar Naseem, were also in the presidium.
Writing since 1970 Kaul is an acclaimed broadcaster-playwright of the State and is known for bold usage of idioms and phrases in drama writing.
