JAMMU, Apr 9: J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) in collaboration with Tarakeshwara Foundation, Visakhapatnam, organized a carnatic classical music concert, in Abhinav Theatre, here this evening.
A child prodigy from Mangalore, Master Sadhgun Aithal today gave a scintillating one-and-a-half hour Carnatic mandolin recital. He was accompanied by Vid Nikshith T Puttur, also from Mangalore, on the mridangam.
Traditionally, a Carnatic music concert, as distinguished from Hindustani classical music kutcheri, began with a ‘varnam’ followed by a few compositions with one of the chosen compositions as the main item of the concert in which the lead artist elaborated the raga in much detail. The concert ended with a ‘thillana’ – a unique tongue-twister played in high speed tempo.
Sadhgun began his concert with a Lalgudi G Jayaraman’s varnam in charukesi raga set to adi taal.  It was followed with a Muthuswamy Dixitar composition, ghananayakam, in poornachandrika raga set to adi taal. Soon after, he performed the main item of the concert, nadalalodai, composed by Saint Tyagaraja in kalyanvasantam raga, set to roopak taal.
As per the Carnatic tradition, Nikshith took over when Sadhgun completed his main item and exhibited a mesmerizing display of his ingenuity with the celestial mridangam. The main item was followed by a series of compositions. Ninnu vina – a very popular composition by saint-composer Tyagaraja was performed in navarasa kanada raga set to roopak taal. Brahma okate of Tallapaka Annamacharya in bowli raga and Kurai Ondrum Illai of C Rajagopalacharya in ragmallika were the rest of the compositions covered in the concert.
Sadhgun surprised the audience by performing a popular Dogri song Tu Malla Tu of Padma Sachdev, on his mandolin. The concert ended with a Lalgudi Jayaraman’s thillana in revathi raga set to mishrachapu taal and bhagyada Lakshmi Baaramma a la mangalam.
Daljit Singh Chib, Vice-Chairman, Kisan Advisory Board was the chief guest in the programme.
