JAMMU, Feb 11: To commemorate the birth centenary of Begum Akhtar legendary singer, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages today organized a seminar on the life and contributions of Begum Akhtar here at K.L Saigal Hall.
Padamshree Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai presided while Director Doordarshan, Jammu, Anjali Sharma was the chief guest.
Secretary JKAACL, Haroon Rashid and Additional Secretary were also present.
While speaking on the occasion, Prof. Ved Kumari described Begum Akhtar as “Queen of Hearts”. She said that Begum Akhtar was known throughout the world for her melodious voice.
Prof. Ghai said that dedication, commitment and sacrifices of Begum for promotion of classical music will be remembered for long time to come. She said Begum Akhtar gave new dimensions and recognition to the classical Mousiquee in the world.
Anjali Sharma said that Begum Akhtar has contributed whole life in the field of Music and Singing and earned a name in the field of Ghazal singers.
Prof. Rita Jitendra while remembering legendary singer described her best choice of the global audience. She said the Begum was a pious, gentle and of great lady of her times.
Haroon Rashid, Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages said that to commemorate the birth centenary of Begum Akhtar, JKAACL has already hosted a tributary Music programme based on the Ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar in Jammu and Srinagar including Bhaderwah, Doda, Kargil, Leh and Rajouri. He said that a Theatre Festival based on the life and works of Begum Akhtar has already been scheduled in near future in Jammu.
Scholars, poets, writers and senior citizens were present on the occasion.
