BARAMULLA, Aug 1: Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages organized a day- long seminar on Punjabi poetry and a cultural programme at Baramulla.
On the occasion, several writers from different areas of the region presented their poetry. These poets included S S Sodhi, Gurnam Singh Arshi, Damodar Singh, Daljit Singh Paras, Dalbir Kour, Ravinder Kour, Sumanpreet Kour, H S Upashak, Kewalpal Singh, Arsdeep Singh, Hussain Shabnam, Lala Shakir and others.
Popinder Singh Paras, Editor Sheeraza Punjabi, presented welcome address and said that “Punjabi language has a unique sweetness and impact, and it’s therefore important to hold seminars like these to further popularize and promote Punjabi language, literature and culture in every region of Jammu and Kashmir.”
In her address, Harjinder Kour, Principal Guru Nanak Dev Model High School said that there is more need than ever before today to revive traditional languages for the young generation. She also said that in future, the aim should be to conduct more seminars to give more opportunity to youth to showcase their talent.
Gurnaam Singh a senior Punjabi writer, while talking to media, said that Academy efforts to organize the literary and cultural programmes at various places of the region aim at sharpening the skills of the youth who are interested in writing, and to promote Punjabi language.
A book titled “Baba Deep Singh’s Life and Legacy”, written by Dr Jasbir Singh Sarna was also launched on this occasion. A cultural programme was also presented in which Gidha (Punjabi folk dance) was performed by budding students of Guru Nanak Dev Model High School, Baramulla.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Sukhpreet Kour whereas Sulinder Singh Sodhi, President Punjabi Sahit Sabha Baramulla extended the vote of thanks.
