JKBOSE conducts programme on mental health awareness

SRINAGAR, Dec 1: The Academic Division of Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) conducted a one-day programme on mental health awareness at JKBOSE, Bemina, Srinagar with the objective to sensitise students, teachers and the employees about the importance of mental health and emotional well being.
The programme was attended by eminent psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Assistant Professors, JKBOSE officers and officials, teachers and students from schools of District Srinagar. The event encompassed a range of activities which addressed different aspects of mental health and wellbeing focussing with the aim to create awareness and dialogue surrounding the problem.
Dr Mohammad Maqbool Dar, Head, IMHANS-K presided over the function. Ayesha, a short film made by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Women’s College, Srinagar, on the theme of mental health and ways of coping with mental health issues, was screened for the audience.
Dr Arif Jan, Deputy Director, Academics, JKBOSE, said it was the need of the hour to talk and understand about mental health.
In her opening remarks, Naila Neelofar, Assistant Director, Academics, JKBOSE, talked about the integration of life skills in JKBOSE curriculum which will help students to empathise, manage anger, stress and time, do critical thinking and problem solving to face the ups and downs of life.
Prof Roshan Ara, Head, Department of Women’s Studies, underscored the significance of mental health awareness in the changing global social dynamics and also focused on the balance between different aspects of life in her speech.
In his presentation titled ‘Mental Health Scenario in J&K – Challenges and the Road Ahead’, Dr Mohammad Maqbbol Dar, Head, IMHANS-K discussed with the audience the situation at the grassroots. He also interacted with members of the audience in an interactive session in which various themes regarding the prevalence, societal attitudes and coping with mental health issues came up for discussion.
This was followed by a panel discussion titled ‘Sorting out Stress – Navigating Person, Profession and Personal Relationships in the Contemporary Era’.
The panelists comprised Prof Arshad Hussain, IMHANS, K; Dr Roshan Ara, University of Kashmir; Dr Aijaz Ahmad and Muzaffar Ahmad, Clinical Psychologist; Fayaz Ahmad, JKSCERT; Muqaddas and Mudaa, students from GHSS, Kothibagh. MrIftikhar Imran, Academic Officer, JKBOSE, conducted the proceedings.
