JKDF appeals Panchs, Sarpanchs to boycott MLC elections

JAMMU, Dec 1:  JKDF President Anil Gupta has appealed to the Panchs and Sarpanchs to boycott the forthcoming Legislative Council elections as these elections are conducted without empowerment and basic rights to Panchayats.
He alleged that the NC-Congress have forged a pact to jointly contest four seats of the Legislative Council even without completion of the exercise of having three tier Panchayti Raj System. The whole exercise is only for inducting the four persons of their choice into the Assembly. Block Development Council elections are deliberately cancelled by this Government by an ordinance to save its face, he added.
He said “the first and foremost condition for holding the elections for four seats of Legislative Council from Panchayat quota is the empowerment of the basic democracies including the Panchayats and also the civic bodies of the State, without which the whole exercise would be nothing more than eyewash”. There has been no extensive revision of the electoral rolls nor the delimitation of the wards in accordance with the law although elections to local bodies are also heading in December just in a week’s time now. This Government is befooling the people, particularly panchs and Sarpanchs. We strongly appeal to all Panchs and Sarpanchs of J&K to boycott the elections”, added Mr Gupta
He said it was ridiculous that those Congress leaders who have earlier opposed the holding of Panchayat elections without incorporation of 73rd and 74th Amendment of Indian Constitution are now sailing with the National Conference.
