JKESL highlights grievances, demands of ex-servicemen

JAMMU, Sept 9: A meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Ex-services League (JKESL) was held at the league office in the Rajya Sainik Board Complex under the JKESL president Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal.
After paying tributes to the Army martyrs, who made supreme sacrifice of their lives in J&K State, the president lamented that the State Government was not reciprocating even nominally to look after the interests of the armed forces personnel, war widows and the ex-servicemen who belong to the State.
“The Government project of acquiring land for Fauji colonies is in lurch on one pretext or the other while the annuity paid to the gallant warriors and war widows has not been revised for the last 9 years,” he added.
“Ninety percent ESM retire young at about 35/37 years of age. J&K Government has fixed 6 percent horizontal reservation for then in lower jobs only; even that is not implemented. The double taxation of toll tax and GST is hitting the ESM hard when there is largest concentration of troops in J&K that substantially boosts the State’s economy. There are no incentives for ESM self employment ventures, co-operatives or opportunities and reservation for their wards in professional institutes, as provided by all other states in the country,” he further said.
Announcing the JKESL will observe a holiday on 23rd Sept in all its offices, he appealed all institutions, autonomous bodies, commercial establishments and Public undertakings to observe 23rd Sept as a close holiday and “Insaf Divas” to remember Maharaja Hari Singh for his justice and communal harmony.
The executive body also decided to observe last week of September as ESM week, during which ESM rallies will be held at block, tehsil and district levels for highlighting the issues submitting memorandums to DDCs.
All District and Tehsil presidents were called upon to promote Prime Minister’s Swachhata Abhiyan in village schools, colleges, and health centers/hospital during the ESM week.
Prominent among those, who attended the meeting, included Col (Dr) Virendra K Sahi, Col SA Qureshi, Col Karan Singh, Lt Col D S Salaria Lt Col Kulwant Singh Samyal and Lt Col M S Salaria.
