JKMTCA demands insurance cover for truck drivers & co-workers

JAMMU, Apr 28: President of J&K Motor Transport Companies Association (JKMTCA), Gajan Singh Khajuria today demanded insurance cover for truck drivers and co-workers carrying essential supplies in various parts of country during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“Our Association has taken up various issues with the Government, including providing insurance cover, safety gears to truck drivers and cleaners besides incidents of harassment with them and stopping of vehicles at various places by the respective states’ authorities. We are hopeful of positive announcements regarding this from the Government soon,” said Singh in press statement issued here.
He sought a relief package from the Government for service providers, including Rs 15,000 to each driver to sustain his family during the ongoing lockdown.
They demanded that the NHAI should provide food to truck drivers at its toll plazas as all the dhabas (food stalls) and eateries running roadsides are closed since lockdown announced by the Government on March 24.
He demanded the Government to set up a 24×7 helpline number for truck drivers for help in case of any interruption on highways.
