JKP hosts daylong conference on ‘Urban Policing’

JAMMU, Nov 8: In a move aimed at enhancing urban policing, the Jammu and Kashmir Police today hosted a daylong conference on “Urban Policing” at the Conference Hall of the District Police Line (DPL) Jammu.
Focussed on smarter strategies for safer cities, the event was attended by DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh, SSP Traffic Faisal Qureshi, SP Headquarters Irshad Rather, all Zonal SPs, SP PC Jammu, SDPOs, DySP Headquarters Jammu, DySP PC Jammu, incharge DySP Dar, other police officers, civil administration officials, prominent citizens, Chamber of Commerce representatives, media, academicians, and law students from Jammu University.
During his opening address, DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma emphasized the need for smarter policing in urban areas, highlighting Jammu Police’s leading role in organizing such discussions.
He stressed the importance of technology like CCTV networks and Command Control Centres for effective crime control.
The conference featured talks and discussions led by various speakers, including SDPO Gandhinagar Kartik Shrotriya, Retired Judge Subash Gupta, Chamber of Commerce President Arun Gupta, Law Professor Navdeep Kaur, Secretary JDA Vishwajeet Singh, Secretary JMC Chand Singh, and DySP Traffic City North Farah Nishat.
SDPO Kartik Shrotriya highlighted issues and progress in urban policing, pointing to successful models in other Indian cities.
Key conference topics included urban policing challenges, such as traffic management, land and sand mafias, terrorism, and the need for modernized police stations.
Speakers proposed innovative solutions like installing CCTV at key locations, including bus stands, road links, railway stations, and public places, adopting advanced technology, like Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, to reduce human intervention, equipping police with modern gadgetry, weaponry, and forensic support, developing an urban police model tailored to meet urban challenges, assigning road accident investigations to specialized traffic police stations.
SSP Jammu Joginder Singh concluded the event, noting the evolving nature of urban crime and the need for technology-driven strategies.
He emphasized that criminals often stay ahead of law enforcement, stressing the importance of ongoing adaptation and innovation.
The conference provided a platform for law enforcement, policymakers, and the public to contribute insights and recommendations.
After the main session, SSP Jammu presented on border security and cross-border crime management, attended by senior police officers and local law enforcement.
